You have your skincare routine, complete with cleanser, moisturiser & eye care, but still your skin is not glowing like a Hollywoodian. As gentlemen we make some pretty common skincare mistakes, that could actually be making our skin worse. We're told it's all to do with our diet, smoking, drinking and just needing to use products, but it's not always completely down to that. We look at 6 of the worst and most common bad skincare habits, and why you should be doing everything you can to avoid them.
1. Lack of patience in products
Patience, patience, patience! Come on let's be honest, in a generation where we expect everything now, we can all suffer from a little bit of impatience at times. But, patience in your skincare products is vital. That means, if you buy an anti-ageing moisturiser, do not expect the Benjamin Button effect to occur after one use. We're yet to find a miracle cure, so just give your products a chance to work. A good product should be given at least 30 days of following the recommended usage to really start to judge. Now we know everyone has different skincare needs, so if in the event your new product does cause a bad reaction, then we suggest you stop using it straight away. To better equip you for the future, we would advise looking at the product ingredients to see if you are allergic or have a bad reaction to a specific ingredient.
2. Not knowing your skin type
Many a gent will have fallen foul of this one. Knowing your skin type, is essential before considering buying any product that you will use on your skin. If you do not know what skin type you have or what concerns you are suffering from, then it is impossible to find a solution. For example, if you are a man with sensitive skin, by knowing your skin type you will be able to reduce the risk of buying a product with ingredients that could flare up your face or that will not help you in the slightest. Ingredients within an oily skincare product, will be different to those of a sensitive skincare range as both skin types need different levels of care. Not sure how to find your skin type? 3. Avoiding the sun lotion
Perhaps the worst habit of all, considering that non-melanoma skin cancer is one of the most common in the world and affects more than 100,000 new people every year in the UK alone (according to NHS). So why would you risk increasing your chances? Sun protection is not just for the beach on your 2 week holiday, SPF protection is needed all year round, as rays from the sun can still damage your skin even when you don't think it could. We know what you're thinking, and yes you do still need this in sunny old England! But, you don't always need sun lotion, as you can kill two birds with one stone, by investing in a moisturiser with SPF to keep you protected.
4. Excessive use of products
You may be thinking, "Hold on, I just bought a product off your site, and now you're telling me it's wrong to use too much of it." If so, then you would be correct. You need to be aware of the fine line between looking after your skin, and damaging your skin. Over-using products can cause you more damage than not using any product at all. The most common example is using too much of that exfoliator, which can cause you to strip the skin of natural oils, making it more sensitive and prone to rashes.
5. Picking at spots
The habit of picking pimples on your face is one that is easy to be drawn into and just as hard to get out of, but for your own good STOP NOW! It doesn't matter whether these pimples are just the odd blemish or whether it's a case of severe acne, picking at spots can lead to scarring. It also has the potential to rupture the skin underneath, which can lead to (you guessed it) even more spots. Something, which we're sure you'd like to avoid.
6. Not paying attention to ingredients
How many of us pay more attention to whether our favourite celebrity said it was great, than actually pay attention to what's in our products? Harmful ingredients are common place in many products, and especially damaging when suffering from concerns such as acne, or a dry, flaky scalp. So find out which ingredients you should be avoiding for the sake of your body and check any time you buy a new product.
